Professor Lemmon

Professor Pittman Clifford Lemmon was a graduate of Wilson High School in Florence, S.C. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Claffin College and a Master of Education from South Carolina State College, both in Orangeburg, S.C.

He was a teacher and administrator for the Lake City Schools for more than thirty years. He was the only principal of Carver High School and one of the many principals of the Lake City Colored School from the early 1950's until the early 1970's. He retired from the Lake City school system in 1979. From this school have come some of our most prestigious graduates of this community and are now serving throughout the nation. His guidance produced our nation’s astronaut, top-ranking military personnel, judges, lawyers, doctors, ministers, teachers, mayors, politicians, professionals and contributing citizens.

Professor Lemmon live a full and active life. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for fifty years. He served in the United Sates Army during World War II. He opened an upholstery business prior to his retirement from the school system. Many lives have been changed through his giving and serving throughout the educational system of Lake City S. C.

Colleagues remembers Professor Lemmon as an energetic co-worker as they attempted to work through the problems inherent to the early years of school integration which was completed during 1970; as the schools in Lake City and the surrounding areas became fully integrated at the start of the 1970 school year. “His life was the epitome of courage, vision and deep faith. Our educational system will be a living monument as to his foresight and his indefatigable devotion to youth, to education and to humanity. He left an indelible imprint on the lives of many of varying ages. His sterling qualities and his great work lives on.”

He joined in holy matrimony to Mable Gilliard. This union was blessed with two children, a daughter, Mrs Gloria L. Echols and a son Mr. Phillip J. Lemmon.

Professor Pittman Clifford “P. C. Prof” Lemmon was born on April 29, 1919 - died on Saturday May 26, 1990.
